Gary Welz teaches mathematics at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York and has had a long and varied career in media and the arts. One of his plays, "Hello, I Must Be Going" was given a reading at John Jay College followed by a discussion of personal feelngs about terrorism. Character actor Gary Welz is well known for his role on the popular comedy series “Chappelle's Show,” his work in commercials, including for Comcast, and his various roles on the stage; however, this performer has quite an extensive resume that reaches far outside the acting world. As a mathematics instructor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, Gary Welz’s lesson plan runs the gamut of all things math, including algebra, arithmetic, probability, finite mathematics, statistics, calculus, and pre-calculus. Gary Welz has used his mathematical talents to write a mathematics module for a learning website and coordinate the college’s 2008 Summer Basic Skills Mathematics Program. Through his employment endeavors, Gary Welz has had the opportunity to work with famous film and television stars, as well as young college students. Gary Welz studied Mathematics and Philosophy at Bedford College, a constituent school of the University of London. Though he was focusing on Mathematics and Philosophy, acting was never far from Gary Welz’s mind. He was a student at Bedford College from 1973 to 1977, during which time he performed in productions put on by the school’s drama club and earned both his Bachelor’s and Master of Science degrees. Before completing his college education, Mr. Gary Welz received the Busk-Howell Scholarship for postgraduate study in Mathematics, and his education gave him the skills he needed to pursue the two careers he enjoys today. When he is not in front of a classroom or camera, Mr. Gary Welz can be found playing basketball and softball, bowling, water skiing, swimming, golfing, or writing. Gary Welz, who currently lives in New York, NY, is also an avid reader.
